Brigadeiro Origins

A Brazilian treasure with a rich, heartfelt past.

The Brigadeiro

(pronounced bree-gah-DAY-ro in Brazilian Portuguese)

is a beloved traditional dessert from Brazil, known for its rich, chocolatey flavor and smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

This iconic sweet was born in the 1940s during a time of political change and social optimism. It was named after Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, a Brazilian Air Force brigadier (hence the name!), who ran for presidency in 1945.

As part of his campaign, supporters—many of them women—began making and selling these chocolate sweets to raise funds. At a time when traditional ingredients like fresh milk and sugar were scarce post-war, they used sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter to create a simple yet irresistible treat. It was a hit, and people began referring to it as the "docinho do Brigadeiro" (the Brigadier's sweet).

Though Eduardo Gomes didn’t win the election, his name lives on in every bite of this cherished confection. Over time, the Brigadeiro evolved—becoming a symbol of celebration, affection, and creativity in Brazilian households.
